Tuesday #TopTip

This weeks #TopTip comes from Lead Modeller Siobhan Doyle for modellers using MAYA:

Maya Modelling tip - Works in 2013.5

You’ve already made your blendshapes, but you want to change your base mesh?

- Delete history on your Base mesh and blends
- Apply blend shapes
- Do your edits on the base (move verts, create or delete loops etc.)
- Select the base mesh and go to vertex edit mode (F9)
- Select a vertex, then hold shift and the right mouse button down and select transform component from the radial menu
- Go back to object mode (F8), still have the base mesh selected
- Hold right mouse button down and select > Inputs > All Inputs from the radial menu
- Use the middle mouse button to drag blend shape below the tweak node
- Go to Edit Deformers > Blendshapes > Bake Topology to Target

There are a lot of different methods and scripts to update blends, all with their own strengths and pitfalls, but this is the one I use most often.  It’s surprisingly quick and simple once you get used to it.  Some changes might be destructive, so if you’re doing extensive edits to your base mesh, save often and update the blends from time to time.
