Making the Gup-B and Gup-F #ToYourStations

It’s time to talk MORE gups – and this time it’s the making of Gup-B and Gup-F!

The Gup-B first appeared in Meomi’s Octonauts book Only Lonely Monster  – as a navy blue Shark shaped Gup.

This is the Gup built for speed and agility.

From that original design our 2D Artist Derek Horan came up with multiple UBER COOL concepts for shark shaped gups - including some awesome hammerhead versions:

The final design ended up as the one on the show today, based on a tiger shark, which came from Derek working closely with Art Director Stephen Robinson and our co-executive producers and creators of the original books Meomi.

And then the final design goes onto modelling and texturing.

… and then onto Shaders and lighting:

The Gup-B got A LOT of outings – usually driven by Kwazii! In case of emergencies he can also make a swift exit with the Gup-B ejector seat.

NOW.

Let’s talk Gup-F!

Appearing in the Season One episode, Speedy Sailfish, where all the Gups disappear and the Octonauts team have to find them:

Again, our 2D mastermind Derek Horan came up with the design of the push bike style Gup.

And it was into the same process – first some grey scale modelling and texturing.

The Gup-F showed up again in Season Two, where we found out it was the first Gup Tweak ever built. When a storm hit, the Gup-F was completely wrecked, as was a nearby coral reef.

Tweak then had the brain-wave for the Gup-F to start a new life as the basis for an artificial reef, which provided a new home for the creature’s whose home had been destroyed. Quite the noble retirement!

AND CHECK OUT THE GUP-F TOY!!
