Meet Rigger Élodie Thomas! #Interview

Meet our super rigger Élodie Thomas! She switched her studies from science to animation in order to pursue her dream! We managed to catch her for a few minutes to chat about her role and why she loves animation.

How did you get into animation?

Since I was little girl, every morning and evening, I would watch pre-school shows before and after school classes. I always enjoyed drawing and creating stories. However, I thought this world was inaccessible, perhaps because I didn't have the knowledge from my family circle.

So, I followed my second passion, science, more specifically Animal Behaviour. During my scientific studies, I always kept the animation world, and my wish to create and make people dream, in mind! That is why, after I got my diploma and with my parents’ support, I decided to apply to an animation school and try my chance… and I was accepted! :)

How long have you worked in the animation industry?

This is my first year and my first job as a Rigger at Brown Bag Films.

What's your current role and what does it involve?

My current role is Rigger. When I try to explain my job to people who don't know anything about 3D, I say that I'm kind of a puppeteer.

I create a system to help make objects, plants, characters look alive. I collaborate with Modelers and Animators in my work. At Brown Bag Films, I participate in meetings to discuss possible rigging issues in episodes before animation starts. I also communicate with Riggers from our overseas studio to provide rig reviews and approvals.

What are your biggest influences/inspirations?

I was touched by the Japanese culture with Ghibli Studio: Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle… I am also a fan of Disney!

I'm inspired by nature which can always surprise you! (Probably my scientific mind speaking here). And also, from Video Games (Zelda, FF, LOL…)!

What’s your favourite tool to use and why?

There are too many interesting tools… That is why I really enjoy being a Rigger. You are a « multi-pass » and need many different tools to solve issues!

What advice would you give someone considering getting into animation?

First, believe in your dreams! That is your fuel!

Second, listen to and observe more experienced people. They will give you feedback and critique. Receive them well and learn from them.

Third, don't give up - even if it's hard. You will probably make mistakes… But, you will learn and gain experience from them.

Fourth, always be interested in everything around you, all things are a source for inspiration!

In fact, keep your 'child eyes', along with an organised and strong mind.

And sometimes, simplicity can be the key. “KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid”, said my Master.

What do you like most about working in animation?

I really feel privileged to do what I really enjoy! I am surrounded by passionate and talented people… Sharing with them. And I really like to see the final character animations after rigging and say “This is my baby” ;)

What’s been the most challenging thing about working in animation?

Time just goes so quickly! This is the biggest challenge!

Outside of animation what are you most passionate about?

It is hard to say… but sport, food, science, boardgames and video games… Too many things to state them all! :D
