Meet Junior Modeller Emma McCarthy #interview

Meet Emma McCarthy, our awesome Junior Modeller! Emma's passion for animation drove her to switch careers from landscape architecture to animation modelling and when she's not doing something which involves animation you'll find her braving the great outdoors! We caught her for a few minutes to discuss her love of animation and what her role involves.

How did you get into animation?

That is a long story that started 12 years ago! The short version is that I had a background in Landscape Architecture but always preferred the 3D visual aspect of that role. Through my love (though some might say obsession!) of learning new software I came across people working in the game and animation industry while doing a short 3D course in London. This opened up a whole new world of 3D that I never thought I could be a part of.

Looking at the work and talent coming out of the big studios in London and the likes of Brown Bag Films here in Ireland, I decided heading back to college was the right move for me.

Four years later, a three year degree in Computer Animation over in Wales completed and here I am working as a Junior Modeller in Brown Bag Films! Easy!

How long have you worked in the animation industry?

Nearly 8 months and counting!

What's your current role and what does it involve?

I am currently modelling sets which involves taking 2d designs and pre-vis block-outs created from the script of the show and modelling them to a polished finish. I then dress the sets with props and anything else that is needed to complete the final look, unwrap it and send it off for texturing and rigging.

What are your biggest influences/inspirations?

I love the work of illustrators Arthur Rackham, John Tenniel and Tony DiTerlizzi. I also find great inspiration on the net through 3D websites, forums and Pinterest. You can find a lot of inspiration in the workplace too. Everyone has different art styles and different ways of doing things so you are constantly learning.

What’s your favourite tool to use and why?

I love to use ZBrush whenever I get the chance. It’s a tool that gives you such creative freedom compared to other modelling packages. My brother introduced me to it back in first year in college and it has been a huge part of my workflow since then. Maya is the main tool I use day to day and ZBrush really compliments and speeds up that workflow especially when I’m working on more organic pieces.

What advice would you give someone considering getting into animation?

Dream big and work hard! It’s never too late to get into animation. People thought I was mad going back to college for three years but it’s been the best decision I’ve made.

If you are thinking of getting into the industry be prepared to work hard but have fun. There are a lot of very talented people around so try not to compare yourself to them. Draw inspiration and motivation from their work instead.

You can never do enough modelling! Sitting watching tutorials all day will get you nowhere if you’re not practicing what you learn. Find inspiration, build a reference library, learn your anatomy and show people your work! No matter how bad you think your work is, a little constructive criticism will go a long way to helping you build a great portfolio. That was one of the hardest things I had to learn along the way but my work is all the better for it.

What do you like most about working in animation?

You get to make cartoons for a living! Being surrounded by talented people who all love doing what they do makes coming to work very easy. Also, seeing your work being brought to life by texture artists and animators will never get old!

What’s been the most challenging thing about working in animation?

Things can move very quickly in this industry. Getting up to speed with a shows pipeline can be difficult and stressful at first but no one is there to catch you out and someone is always there to help. Also, keeping up to speed with the tech and software is something you have to work on constantly. You will never stop learning but that’s what makes it fun.

Outside of animation what are you most passionate about?

When I get the chance I like to surf and be outdoors! I’m slightly obsessed with all things rugby!! I also love to read and collect old books and have a passion for collecting anything vintage and old that can tell a story!
