Meet CG Supervisor Jason Reeves! #Interview

Meet our awesome Dublin-based CG Supervisor Jason Reeves. He's been in the biz just about two decades now and kindly shared some of his experiences with us:

How did you get into animation?

Initially, I went to school for Technical Illustration but always had an interest in film.

Just before I graduated I worked as an intern at a special effects studio and got hooked on 3D software. Long story short, I took a 6 month 3D animation course and got myself a job at Nelvana in Toronto, Canada. My first job was on Rolie Polie Olie.

How long have you worked in the animation industry?

Almost 20 years.

What's your current role and what does it involve?

I am the CG supervisor on Doc McStuffins and my job is to direct the technical aspects of the production and make decisions on everything from how we are going to build particular assets such as a jungle to complex character problems such as crowds.

What are your biggest influences and inspirations?

From an early age, I was always interested in the journey of storytelling. Some of the cartoons that I watched growing up were from Japan, such as Star Blazers.

These cartoons had a clear beginning and end for each season. Each episode was connected to the next until the final “grande finale” episode. These stories inspired me all the way through design to animation.

What’s your favourite tool to use and why?

My favourite tool is Maya, which we use for the production on Doc McStuffins.

What advice would you give someone considering getting into animation?

The advice I would give is probably the same as anyone else - work hard - but make sure you are having fun along the way! ;)

What do you like most about working in animation?

In all my experience, the best part of animation has been the people I have worked with. So many creative and funny people. It's always great to go into work knowing that.

What’s been the most challenging thing about working in animation?

Technology is changing at such a fast rate that it is certainly hard to keep up with every trend.

Outside of animation what are you most passionate about?

Music and playing music. The musical instruments I play I refer to as the holy trinity of rock - bass, drums and lead guitar! :D
