Into animation? Here's a #toptip from the studio via our terrifically bearded Senior Editor Brian O'Brien - this one's on the key skills an editor should possess.
Brian: Technical knowledge, attention to detail, a great beard… there are many attributes that are valuable for an Editor, but most important of all are good instincts!
Software can be learned, shortcuts memorised and you can spend years immersing yourself in the finer details of cinematic language - but none of these count for much without the ability to feel out what works (and what doesn’t!). The ability to put yourself in the mind of your characters, your audience (and sometimes your Director).
I often find that a good Editor is also a natural storyteller, the kind of person who can hold your attention at the dinner table or in the bar with a well timed joke.
All of this requires a certain empathy, or sensitivity… incidentally, this is also what makes Editors such lovely people!
