2D Animator Dave Dekeyser created this cool fanart runcycle based on the character of Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. We thought it would be fun to take a quick peak at how he worked up this runcycle:
Dave: The new Ghost in The Shell movie will hit cinemas soon and I wanted to pay tribute to the original animated film by Mamoru Oshii :)
The runcycle was done using Toonboom's vector brushes. They allow for a sketchy look that doesn't look too digital.
I used a timing of 8 drawings on 2's because it is easy to breakdown and inbetween. In the first rough stage, I like to animate the body without any details (like clothing or secondary action).
The hair was drawn on a separate layer after I had animated the main action.
Once the main action worked, I went in and added the clothing detail while cleaning up the linework.
For the colouring, I imported the animation into Photoshop, because I wanted to use a brush for some shading.
