Equinox Charity Cycle 2016

Another year, another tough but enjoyable cross country cycle completed in a day! Last Saturday over 40 cyclists travelled 240km from the Irish Sea in Clontarf to the Atlantic in Bundoran Donegal. In its 6th year now, the Equinox cycle has seen around 250+ cyclists take on the challenge of cycling across the country in 1 day for Temple Street Children’s hospital and Headway, 2 local Dublin charities. In doing so we have collectively raised almost €120,000.

Once again (6 years and counting) we had no rain, a beautiful sunrise and a welcoming sunset as we departed Dublin at 6:55am and arrived less than 12 hours later at 6:30pm. As always, the amazing support crew comprising of employees of Brown Bag and friends of the cycle, setup stops for the cyclists to arrive into, get some food and drink, have a stretch and then get back on their bikes and pedal onwards before sunset. Without the efficiency of the support crew and the invaluable motor cycle marshals who shepherd us from sometimes angry motorists and other dangers on the road, we’d never make it! To them we owe a great deal of gratitude.

Lunch was had in the welcoming Castle Inn at Newtownforbes, kindly arranged by our very own Gráinne O Reilly who gave us a lovely place to rest our weary limbs for 45 minutes before pedalling on. A big thanks to our sponsors too for all their support, particularly Joe from Christophes café in Smithfield, who not only cycled with us but also provided all the food for the day to keep us going! And to Richard from city cycles who has been with us every year as a support vehicle, providing mechanical help to cyclists who have issues with their bikes on the day. We salute you :)

Finally, we hope to see many of you back next year along with some new faces so mark the 16th September in your 2017 calendars. Until then, here’s an awesome video of the day in just 2 minutes, recorded by our own COO Cathal Gaffney - www.relive.cc/view/715597680

Many Thanks
