Today's #sketch by Background Artist Kirsten Shiel is an homage to suffragette Countess Markievicz!
Kirsten: I did this piece of Countess Markievicz about a year ago, for an exhibition in the United Arts Club in Dublin, to celebrate the centenary of the Easter Rising. She had some amazing quotes, it was really hard to choose just one!
I painted Constance Markievicz because I think she should be someone for all Irish women to look up to. She was an upper class citizen, who decided her place was with the people. She commanded forces as both a suffragette and as a rebel during the Easter Rising.
