Tuesday #TopTip

This weeks #TopTip comes from Senior Editor Seamus O'Toole - for aspiring editors:

The main difference between live-action and animation is that 95% of the editing is done before any animation even starts. The reason for this is because it costs a helluva lot more money to shoot extra 'footage' in animation than it would in live-action. They're, at times, very different practices and the best bit about animation editing is the freedom to not only change the amount of time per shot, but the camera angles, the amount of characters, the mood of a scene…the list goes on.

In terms of tips for aspiring animation editors, a firm grasp of an editing program is a must, obviously! (We use Final Cut Pro here). Other programs that are handy to have a basic grasp of would be After Effects and Storyboard Pro. Photoshop is essential as a director will ask for a revision and you need it then and there. Many times this will go to a revisionist but it can at times be quicker to do the fix yourself.

One more thing would be to have organisational skills! Keeping your projects neat and clear are a must as there can be up to four editors, if not more, working on the same episode spanning a few weeks. Keeping on top of this maintenance is a good way to make sure nobody gets lost!
