Powerscourt Forest #PhotoLighting

As a first encounter with the new proFoto gear, Maria Diez and I headed to the powerscourt forest just outside the waterfalls to give it a quick run and see the power it would deliver. Yes, like another well-known Brown Bagger (Phil McDarby), we love Irish forests too. Although this small forest doesn't really compare to Glencree or such fairytalesque forests in Wicklow, it was nice enough for what we were looking for.

For a change, we were waiting for the sun to go away to take the pictures, go figure… it was a really sunny weekend in Ireland.

The b1 is powerful enough to mimic the sun even in a mid to big size scene like this. Not having to rely on the Irish sun was a relief.

Using a soft diffusion lens filter to catch outside-the-frame bright light blooms, we placed a RFi 2'x3' softbox just outside the left border to catch the bloom, some trees and trunks details and soft shadows over the whole scene.

2 meters behind it, a profoto new Zoom reflector at full power flash gave us the “sun” like light.

The softbox was also used to fill some key areas as below the fallen trunk.

The new zoom reflector pared with a 10` grid was also used to catch some rim lights, as in the middle broken piece of trunk, and the far right trees covered with ivy and branches.

We were impressed to say the least, to get a sun like flash at iso 50, 125th of a second, at f 6.3, over a 6 to 7 meters range, that can all fit in a small 25l backpack.

Can't wait to head out to the proper Irish fairytalesque forests with Phil McDarby, our forest guru, to shed some light. So hold on for more pictures to come soon!
