Meet Legal Executive Meabh O’Shea! #Interview

Meet Meabh O'Shea, our super Legal Executive! Outside of her daily tasks in which she upholds the law and keeps justice prevailing in the animation world, Meabh also creates beautiful artwork, some of which she's shared below! We caught her for a few minutes to discuss the world of animation law and what her role involves.

How did you get into your current role?

That’s a good question! I worked as a Legal Executive part-time while I attended college at UCD, and then while I was figuring out what venture I wanted to pursue, I ended up (through some twist of a fate) as a Receptionist/Studio Coordinator in Brown Bag Films. This was initially intended to be on a temporary basis but I loved it so much that I implored them to let me stay – thankfully they did!!

I then moved on to be the Legal & HR Coordinator, and now I’m a Legal Executive! It was always my intention to get back to working in a legal capacity, and Brown Bag Films have done everything they can to encourage me in my career, which is absolutely fantastic. I love being able to work in such a creative environment, whilst professionally engaging in what I have my qualifications in.

How long have you worked in the animation industry?

A year and eight months – two years in August!

What's your current role and what does it involve?

My position is currently Legal Executive to the Legal & Business Affairs Counsel. My work varies vastly from day-to-day, one moment I could be drafting talent contracts, the next I could be reviewing trademark documents. It largely depends on what each production needs at a given time.

What are your biggest influences/inspirations?

I’d have to say my family! They’re the hardest working and most gracious people I’ve ever encountered. They taught me how to see the good in every situation (especially in people).

What’s your favourite tool to use and why?

My favourite tool… I guess, THE LAW! The main applications we use in my department are the Microsoft Office Suite apps, and whilst none of them would really be awarded the title of favourite, I’d have to say Excel is the most useful to me for work (partially because I like to use pastel colours). I mainly use it to compile information so that it’s easier to digest visually and to track developments so that they can be flagged immediately.

What advice would you give someone considering getting into this industry?

If you’re looking to get an in-house legal role in animation, I would suggest obtaining some experience in a law firm. A prospective candidate should look at specialising in the areas of: commercial contracts, employment contracts, company law, and intellectual property – knowledge of these areas will be invaluable when you go to seek out your desired position.

As with any vocation, staying motivated and positive is essential. It can be easy to lose hope when you’re applying for jobs, but keep your head up – patience is a virtue, and whilst sending out applications, stay on top of recent legal developments in the above areas, you’ll get your dream job if you keep working at it!

What do you like most about working in an animation studio?

The people (both human and of the four-legged, furry variety). Brown Bag Films has a wealth of wonderful people and a brilliant community spirit, unmatched by any other place I have worked previously. Each individual has their own story and extraordinary talent.

What’s been the most challenging thing about working in an animation studio?

Hmm… I can’t think of any to be honest! Generally all challenges are welcome - I’m lucky to be part of such a strong team, and to work across such a diverse number of sectors.

Outside of animation what are you most passionate about?

When I’m not in work, or studying for exams, I love doing my own artwork! Recently I’ve begun doing pieces (portraits of people, pets, homes, etc.) for commission and it’s been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding endeavours I’ve ever undertaken. I use all sorts of materials: markers, watercolours, charcoal, graphite, pen.. my biggest goal is to step into the realm of oil portraits!

I’m in the process of setting up a website, but you can see what artwork I’m up to in the meantime on my Instagram account @meabhos!
