Ghost in the Shell #RunCycle

2D Animator Dave Dekeyser created this cool fanart runcycle based on the character of Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. We thought it would be fun to take a quick peak at how he worked up this runcycle:

Dave: The new Ghost in The Shell movie will hit cinemas soon and I wanted to pay tribute to the original animated film by Mamoru Oshii :)

Runcycle Colour

The runcycle was done using Toonboom's vector brushes. They allow for a sketchy look that doesn't look too digital.

I used a timing of 8 drawings on 2's because it is easy to breakdown and inbetween. In the first rough stage, I like to animate the body without any details (like clothing or secondary action).

The hair was drawn on a separate layer after I had animated the main action.

Runcycle Clean

Once the main action worked, I went in and added the clothing detail while cleaning up the linework.

Runcycle Lineart

For the colouring, I imported the animation into Photoshop, because I wanted to use a brush for some shading.

And, there you have it:
