Alien Cyclops Sculpt #Sculpture

Art Director Andrew Hamilton has been busy whipping up some sculpts in his free time. Check out some of his previous work Fallen Predator and Killer Croc! We asked him a little about his latest piece, the Alien Cyclops sculpt (pictured below), and his work process.

Andrew: This piece is approx. 3 inches tall, made with Chavant NSP medium and a glass eye and took around 2 hours to make. I generally work quite quickly to rough out a form with my hands, creating shapes in the clay until I find an interesting shape and then I roll with it. Sometimes I have to stop because it doesn't end up looking really good, in which case I mush it up and start again.

Once I find a shape I like, I begin refining it more, using wire loop tools and everything from toothbrushes to toothpicks to add detail. A gentle surface melt using a chefs blowtorch blends some of the harder edges together to look a little more organic.

I surround myself with lots of inspiration when I work, artists I like, but mainly (and more importantly) real life reference in the form of animal photos, images of deep sea creatures etc. When creating a character, nature is always the best resource for inspiration!

I’m hoping to do a few of these size sculpts each week, just to practice both technique working with the clay, and to explore new designs.
